Building Alliances: The Role of a 3D Lead Artist
A 3D Lead Artist is responsible for overseeing the creation of 3D assets and ensuring they align with the artistic direction of a project. Their key responsibilities include:
- Artistic Direction: Setting visual style, quality standards, and ensuring consistency throughout the project.
- Team Leadership: Managing and mentoring a team of 3D artists, delegating tasks, and providing feedback.
- Collaboration: Working with other departments (e.g., animators, designers) to ensure assets integrate smoothly.
- Asset Creation: Leading the creation of key assets, while ensuring they meet both artistic and performance standards.
- Problem Solving: Resolving technical and creative issues that arise during production.
- Review and Feedback: Reviewing team members' work and providing constructive feedback.
- Scheduling: Managing deadlines and ensuring assets are delivered on time.
RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER LEADS:
- 2D Lead: With the assistance of the 2D Lead, we are able to create the foundation/layout of the 3D model on a 2D plain which would act as the blueprint.
- Research Lead: The research lead is what guides the team to focus on the relevant research we need. Understanding the processes of how something is made like a lock/tool/weapon. There are different compartments that are not always seen that need to be researched upon.
- Producer: The Producer must be informed of the developments made to give their opinions on the work.
As to how this links to my work, I am to collaborate with the 2D Lead, Lead Research and our producer to ensure assets run smoothly.
Managing and giving my opinions on the 3D work is a key factor that I have struggled but tried to work upon and pick up on my own drawbacks.
