Toolkit 2 2D Week 10 - Unreal Implementation

Image
In this session, we went onto Unreal Engine for the first time, looking into the simple mechanics that we would need to learn. However this is not for the grade as it does not apply to our MLOS, rather it applies to real life when applying to jobs within this field. Knowledge of Unreal will be of use to us when going into the gaming industry just like knowing how to 3D Model.   We messed around with a few commands: Shift + 1 = Place Actors Shift + 7 = Edit Placing models to form a Gazebo of sorts for a few minutes, which would apply as the base to us messing with lighting, size and shapes. If we were to hit play, we are able to run around the plain as either 1st/3rd person. As for lights, it can be found in Place Actors. These lights can then be altered to turn on and off if certain things apply such as: - Walking into a designated spot that will initiate the command to turn the light on - Once leaving the designated spot that will cause the light to turn off. This is possible by m...

Week 9 Industry Practice: Role Model - Raphael Lacoste

Art Directors perform a range of tasks while supervising art projects from conception to completion. Their responsibilities vary depending on their sector, but often include: Collaborating with clients and relevant employees, such as the Creative Director, Writer or Marketer, on design concepts Creating sketches or storyboards of design concepts Presenting sketches and concept ideas to clients, the Creative Director, accounts teams and other relevant parties Hiring creatives, such as Graphic Directors or Photographers, to develop design concepts Selecting and booking locations and studios, as required Overseeing creatives to ensure they work productively and meet the brief and budget Maintaining graphic consistency across all deliverables Reviewing graphic materials to assess its validity and appropriateness for the brand Making changes directed by clients and overseeing edits In comparison, I only have a select amount of these skills that are typically required such as collaboration a...

Building Alliances: Block outs

Image
I have created a few blockouts as a concept for the designs of the models we will be presenting. For the first, I had created a block out of the diving gear's air tanks that would be placed on the back of the diver as they traverse. It wouldn't be too large or else the weight will restrain the marine biologist even further. The next few are small parts to the puzzle idea I had in mind for the possible safes hidden with rewards. The player would have to cut the wires correctly to open it without it imploding for example. I also figured I could add a keypad too to type in a possible code.  s I plan to create further developments tomorrow to post on the blog with a deeper analysis. If there is one thing I'd like to address is the struggle with creating an air tank in Maya. I struggle with creating a tube to curl around and seem genuine. This is an issue I must work on at some point or create an entirely different asset to compensate. ALSO I have designated 3D assets to my pee...

Industry Practice: Games Industry

Image
Using UKIE, a website used for statistical info and infographics about the games industry, I was able to discover articles on the matter of game industry analysis in the recent years. According to the new data:  There are 2,555 active games companies, games service providers and games-related academic institutions listed in the UK, an increase of over 31% since 2016. Of the 2,555 games businesses based in the UK, 2,202 are games companies, 213 are service companies and 140 are academic institutions that offer games related courses and training. Looking at games companies across the nations of the UK, the vast majority are based in England. 2001 are based there in comparison to 108 in Scotland, 59 in Wales and 38 in Northern Ireland. Although London is home to the most games businesses across the nations of the UK, with a total of 713 companies, sizeable games city clusters include Manchester (75), Brighton (72), Guildford (71), Slough (63), Cambridge (45), Bristol (42), Sheff...

Toolkit 3D: Character Concept

Image
We were given a prompt for our character creation, out of the many, I have chosen to create DESERT NOMAD MYSTIC. Desert Nomads are individuals that frequently travel through the terrain of the desert from one place to another. However, the inclusion of MYSTIC would suggest the uniqueness of the Nomad with the inclusion of runes on their body and glowing effects like in the eye or around the body.  MOODBOARD: Sketches/Concept: For these quick sketches, I felt that the typically baggy outfit for most desert nomad was most fitting with the inclusion of a staff that could possibly be used for the mystic arts. It's a typical item used with powerful or magical beings that travel within media.

Building Alliances: Presentation and 3D Blockout Process

Image
In our lecture today, Banshee Studios (my group) presented our pitch to the class for our game, Subsignal. For my part in the presentation, I provided the base story line we had gone with: - Nottingham set 500 years into the future - Global warming's effect on the sea levels rising at an abnormal rate - Nottingham flooded - Caves collapsed and taken over by the sea - Player: Marine set to explore these caves and cover new uncharted territory etc. We will be provided the feedback soon. In addition, I worked on the blockout for the oxygen tank. It is a simplistic design as I wanted these to be oxygen tanks left behind during the flooding that can be discovered and used by the player. Furthermore, as the Lead 3D designer, I felt as though creating multiple versions of the mesh would provide more creativity and allow us to present more assets rather than restricting it to just one person for each asset. No designs will be exactly the same as the other due to the minds of others functi...

Industry Practice: Research on Anxiety

Image
Many people worry about things such as health, money, or family problems. But anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. Anxiety is something that stays with you and does not leave and can even get worse over time. This can affect everyday life, including education, work and social environments. [anon] The anxiety I was researching is social anxiety: The fear of social situations including the feelings of embarrassment and judgement. I have experience with people who have social anxiety through real life scenarios and friendships I have with them. Although it may not be true, some will believe that others are judging behind the scenes or are possibly focusing on them when it is clearly not the case in my eyes. Social Anxiety can affect:  - Self-Confidence  - Relationships  - Mental Health  - Education  - Work Opportunities For our group project, we are creating a game that would incorporate an online therapy session and I believe that so...
